How Does CoolSculpting Work?

CoolSculpting works with the body’s natural processes to treat unwanted fat. This works because fat cells in our body freeze at 37 degrees Fahrenheit, compared to surrounding tissues which freeze at 32°F. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers a precise temperature to targeted fat areas. The skin and surrounding areas are protected while the fat cells under the skin are frozen until crystallization occurs. Those fat cells die, through a process called cryolipolysis. As the body’s natural healing and metabolism processes take hold, the cells will be gradually removed.*

Each treatment lasts as little as one hour.* The number of sessions depends on the number of areas being treated per visit. Your treatment plan may require more or fewer sessions than is average. We will discuss the number of sessions involved prior to your first treatment, but you may benefit from additional sessions if initial results aren’t ideal. Your clinician will develop a treatment plan personalized to your specific fat reduction goals before getting started.*
After treated cells are frozen, the body processes the fat, clearing away those dead cells. This allows you to freeze fat without harming healthy skin.*
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for treatment of the flank, abdomen, thighs, and neck. Over one million CoolSculpting treatments have been performed worldwide, making it a proven, effective treatment for fat reduction.*
Patients lie on the treatment table, with the target area exposed. The provider places the CoolSculpting device on the fatty area, and draws the bulge up between the handpiece’s cooling panels. This feels like a firm pull, and the skin in the area becomes cool and eventually numb. The fat cells need to reach a temperature of 37°F to freeze, but are cooled slowly to prevent shock or harm to your skin tissue.* Once the skin becomes numb, patients feel comfortable and are able to relax – many read, check email, nap or watch Netflix on our widescreen TV in the treatment room.
After your session, your skin will retain the shape of handpiece. Don’t worry – this is only temporary.* Your provider will massage the area to help redistribute the fat cells and promote healing.*
CoolSculpting is not typically painful. Patients will feel pressure and intense cold during the first few minutes of their treatment. Afterwards, the skin becomes numb, and any sensation dissipates.
